BELGRADE - The Serbian Minister of Energy and Mining Petar Skundric said this evening that the South Eastern European regional ministerial conference, "Climate Change and Energy" has shown that there is awareness about the importance of the global issue of climate change.
Speaking at the closing of the two day conference, Skundric said that climate change can have drastic results for humanity and the planet.
One of our most important tasks is to make efforts to limit emission reduction, said Skundric.
He said that countries in the region have the potential to utilize alternative energy sources, adding that Serbia expects the EU’s support for bringing its legislation related to this issue in line with European standards.
Head of the European Commission Delegation to Serbia Vincent Degert said that the conference has shown that south eastern European countries recognise the importance of the issue of climate change, adding that he hopes that the EU will be backed by these countries at the upcoming Copenhagen conference, in its efforts to limit emission reduction.
Degert praised Serbia for the organisation of the conference. He said that the fight against climate change must be a joint global effort in order to be successful.
A declaration was adopted at the conference according to which countries of the region will be obliged to make national policies aimed at reducing harmful emissions.
