OSCE Mission supports Serbian delegation's preparations for UN conference on climate change 23 November 2009

BELGRADE, - A workshop co-organized by the OSCE Mission to support preparations by the Serbian delegation to the UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen in December started in Belgrade today.
The workshop, organized by the OSCE Mission to Serbia and the Ministry for the Environment and Spatial Planning, focused on the negotiations to take place in Copenhagen and the implications of the conference for security and sustainable development.

"This workshop is designed to support the Serbian authorities' efforts to become more engaged in strengthening international environmental governance," said the Head of the OSCE Mission to Serbia's Democratization Department, Daiana Falloni. "Human-caused emissions are leading to global warming and can contribute to environmental migration and adversely affect international security and stability, especially in the field of natural resources distribution."

Other state officials, representatives of local authorities and journalists who will report on the Conference also took part in the workshop.

The UN Climate Change Conference is a meeting of signatories of the 1992 UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, an international environmental treaty intended to prevent anthropogenic climate change. Its aim is to establish a global climate agreement to take effect in 2012, when the previous agreement, the Kyoto Protocol, expires.
